Yahoo IM Connectivity Issues

For folks using Pidgin or Adium (or basically, any other non-standard Yahoo IM client), you’ve probably noticed sporadic connectivity over the last 48 hours.  The reason?  Yahoo has upgraded their authentication method, the clients have yet to catch up, and whether the old authentication works is dependent on the random server you’re connected to when hitting scs.msg.yahoo.com.

The fix?

For Adium, edit your Yahoo IM profile, click Options and change your Login Server to:

cs101.msg.mud.yahoo.com

For Pidgin, modify your Yahoo IM Account, click Advanced and modify the setting under Pager Server to:

cs101.msg.mud.yahoo.com

And you should be connected.  Make sure to keep the scs.msg.yahoo.com address around to change back to after the issue is fixed in the newer clients.

nginx + php-fpm

I’ve been doing a little playing with nginx as a web server (already had lots of good fun with nginx as a load balancer/proxy) and using php-fpm.

Boy is it fast. I’ll throw up a document on how to implement both together soon.

SXSW 2009 photos

SXSW is finally over and I’m just now uploading a lot of the photos that didn’t make it into my 365saw blog.

Check ‘em out here:

SXSWi complete, bring on SXSW music!

SXSW Interactive concluded today with a flurry of great panels.  It’s crazy how five days can go by so quickly, yet amazing how much information can be obtained in such a short period of time.

I’ll be doing some write ups on the better technical presentations and panels I attended as well as some of the ones that completely missed the boat.

One immediate change I’m making is the technology behind http://365saw.com.  I got into Alan Taylor’s presentation on The Big Picture just in time for him to discuss the need to take advantage of today’s high bandwidth and large monitors.  The 500px width on Tumblr just isn’t cutting it for my photoblog.  I’ll be writing some quick Rails to accomplish this for my site and will still utilize Flickr on the backend.  For now, just hit up my 365saw flickr set to view the larger photos.

As always after SXSW, my mind is spinning with fresh ideas but for now, it’s time to enjoy the music portion of SXSW for the next five days.

Investing in a photographer

Just donated $25 to Boubacar Bagayoko on kiva.org.  Here’s to hoping he’ll be able to buy new equipment and film and bring great photography to Mali.
